What your insurer's complaint record actually looks like

Insurance departments publish every complaint filed against a company and whether they found it had merit. Texas publishes the most, so that is what this shows. It is useful for deciding whether filing a complaint of your own is worth the afternoon.

Applies to Anyone weighing a state complaint alongside an appeal.

An appeal argues with your insurer. A complaint to the insurance department goes over their head. The second is free, takes about twenty minutes, and gets a regulator asking your insurer to explain itself — which is a different kind of pressure.

Read this as Texas data, because that is what it is. Texas publishes the largest complaint database in the country, so it is the best available picture of how a national insurer behaves. It is not your state’s record. If your insurer shows nothing here, that most likely means they write little business in Texas, not that nobody complains about them.

Picking a company sends its name to this site’s own server and nowhere else. That path keeps no log.

Confirmation rate
13.4%

“Confirmed” means the Department found the complaint had merit. A rate in the teens is normal across large insurers, so a number on its own says little. It is worth more as a comparison between the companies here than as a verdict on any one of them.

What people complained about

  • Balance Billing; Unsatisfactory Settle/Offer7,508
  • Denial Of Claim2,938
  • Unsatisfactory Settle/Offer2,097
  • Denial Of Claim; Unsatisfactory Settle/Offer1,417
  • Delays (Claims Handling)1,276
  • Unsatisfactory Settle/Offer; Usual And Customary1,146

If your denial matches one of these categories, you are not an edge case, and saying so in a complaint of your own costs nothing.
